Bellevue · Apr 8, 2026County commissioners approve FM-2649 repair project for the Bellevue stretch.

Montague County commissioners approved a $1.2 million contract at their April 7 meeting for resurfacing three miles of FM 2649 between the Bellevue community and the Clay County line. Work is scheduled to begin in early July and is expected to take six to eight weeks.

The stretch in question was last resurfaced in 2009 and has been on the county's maintenance priority list since 2022. Commissioner Precinct 2 representative Gary Nunn said the road has deteriorated significantly in the last two years. "We've had three culvert failures and the base is showing in four or five spots," Nunn said at the meeting.

The contract was awarded to Wichita Falls-based Betenbough Road Services after two bids were received. The county's engineer estimated the work will be done during non-school hours on weekdays. FM 2649 serves as a primary route for the Bellevue ISD bus system, which runs morning and afternoon routes on the stretch. No full closures are anticipated; traffic will be reduced to one lane with flagmen during active work periods.
